How Berry Sourcing works
Built for a defense-adjacent audience where credibility, security, and auditability matter more than flash.
Definition
What is Berry compliance?
The Berry Amendment (10 U.S.C. § 2533a) requires the U.S. Department of Defense to give preference to domestically sourced items in certain categories — most notably textiles, clothing, footwear, and food — including the fibers, yarns, and findings that go into them.
It's distinct from, but often paired with, related frameworks:
- DFARS specialty metals. 252.225-7009 — domestic melt/pour requirements for certain metals used in defense articles.
- TAA (Trade Agreements Act). Permits acquisition of goods from designated countries; a different standard than Berry's domestic-only rule.
- Buy American Act (BAA). Domestic-content thresholds for federal procurement more broadly.
Berry Sourcing tracks all four so a supplier's real coverage is explicit — and so a buyer never confuses TAA-eligible with Berry-compliant.
Process
How verification works
Every Berry Verified seal is issued by AI and a human — never AI alone.
- 01
Upload
A supplier uploads compliance docs — Berry/DFARS certs, country-of-origin declarations, mill certs, TAA statements.
- 02
AI scan
The model recognizes the document type, OCRs scanned or photographed certs, and extracts key fields.
- 03
Cross-check
It compares stated country-of-origin against uploaded mill certs and flags inconsistencies or missing/expired items.
- 04
Score & summarize
It assigns a confidence score, cites the fields that drove the decision, and writes a one-glance summary.
- 05
Human review
Anything ambiguous routes to a reviewer who can accept, edit, or reject. The Verified seal issues only on human approval.
Controls
Security & audit trail
Role-based access control
Suppliers, buyers, reviewers, and admins each see only what their role permits.
Full audit log
Every verification decision — AI and human — is timestamped and traceable to the fields that drove it.
Confidential quoting
Quotes live in private 1:1 threads. Pricing is never public and never shared between suppliers.
Data minimization
Sensitive identifiers are never placed in URLs or query strings; consent is opt-in and privacy-preserving.
